Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga
One of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, at the foot of the Brahmagiri hills, near the source of the Godavari. The sanctum holds a self-manifested linga representing Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh together. The present black-basalt temple was built under Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao (Nanasaheb Peshwa) between 1755 and 1786.
Kushavarta Kund
Legend says Sage Gautam held the Godavari here with kusha grass, giving the kund its name. During the Simhastha Kumbh Mela it is reserved for the Shaiva Akhadas, and the Naga Sadhus lead the royal bath.

Panchavati
Named after its five banyan trees, Panchavati on the Godavari is where, by tradition, Lord Ram, Sita and Lakshman lived during their exile. Legend links the name Nashik to Lakshman cutting off Surpanakha's nose (nasika) at nearby Tapovan.

Simhastha Kumbh Mela: your questions answered
When does the Nashik Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2027 start and end?
It opens with Dhwajarohan, the flag hoisting, on Saturday 31 October 2026 at 12:02 PM, at Ramkund in Nashik and Kushavarta Kund in Trimbakeshwar. It closes when the flag is lowered on 24 July 2028.
When are the main Shahi Snan dates in 2027?
2 August (Somvati Amavasya), 31 August (Shravan Amavasya, the main Shahi Snan), 11 September at Ramkund in Nashik and 12 September at Kushavarta in Trimbakeshwar.
How many Shahi Snans are held?
Three main Amrit Snans in 2027. The third is held on two days, one at each bathing site.
Where does the Nashik Kumbh Mela take place?
At two places about 30 km apart: Ramkund and Panchavati in Nashik on the Godavari, and Kushavarta Kund in Trimbakeshwar, near the source of the river.
What is the Simhastha Kumbh Mela?
The Kumbh held at Nashik–Trimbakeshwar is called Simhastha because it takes place when Jupiter (Brihaspati) is in Leo (Simha). It is one of the four Kumbh Melas, along with Prayagraj, Haridwar and Ujjain.
Why does it run from 2026 to 2028?
The main bathing days fall in 2027, but the full ritual cycle begins with the flag hoisting in October 2026 and ends with the flag lowering in July 2028.
What is the importance of the Shahi Snan?
Devotees believe a dip in the Godavari on these days cleanses sins and brings spiritual merit. The Akhadas bathe first in grand processions, and the public bathes after them.
Where can devotees take the holy dip?
At Ramkund in Nashik and Kushavarta Kund in Trimbakeshwar, and at the other ghats along the Godavari that the administration opens for pilgrims.
When is the next Kumbh Mela in Nashik after 2027?
The Simhastha returns roughly every 12 years, so the next one is expected around 2039.
